The Amazon Shopping app is a mobile storefront for the retailer's catalog, combined with the account tools that surround a purchase: order tracking, returns, saved payment methods, and scheduled repeat deliveries. Search accepts typed text, a scanned barcode, or a photo taken through the phone camera, and results carry a price, a delivery estimate, and an aggregate star rating drawn from customer reviews. The buying flow is short by design. A product page holds images, specifications, questions answered by other buyers, and the review list, while checkout defaults to a saved address and card, reducing an impulse purchase to a couple of taps. Afterward, the orders tab is where much of the app's practical value sits: shipment tracking with delivery windows, a self-service return process that produces a label or a drop-off code, and a purchase history that doubles as a reorder list. Notifications cover dispatch and delivery, and subscription deliveries handle recurring household items on a schedule. It works well for people who already buy regularly from the retailer and want delivery status collected in one place. The catalog's size is also its central problem: one search can mix listings sold by the retailer with listings from third-party sellers of varying reliability, and telling them apart means reading the small print about who sells and who ships. Reviews are moderated but not immune to manipulation, so ratings on obscure products from unfamiliar brands deserve a measure of skepticism.
Pro
- Order tracking and returns are handled entirely within the app, and the self-service return flow with a printable label or drop-off code removes most of the usual back-and-forth.
- Searching by camera or barcode is genuinely practical for reordering a household item, since pointing the phone at existing packaging is quicker than typing out a product name.
- Product pages consolidate specifications, buyer questions, and a large body of reviews, which gives a shopper more to work with than most retail apps provide before a decision.
Con
- Third-party sellers appear alongside first-party stock in the same result list, and identifying who actually ships and warrants an item takes attention the interface does not encourage.
- Stored payment details combined with near-instant checkout make impulse buying very easy, and anyone trying to control their spending has to add that friction back deliberately.
- The app records browsing and purchase behavior in detail to drive recommendations and advertising, and sponsored listings are interleaved with organic results throughout search.
