Start with a feature you intend to use
An app name alone does not explain whether a permission is necessary. A camera is relevant when taking a new profile photo, but not necessarily when reading existing text. Location can be relevant to a nearby search, while the same service may let you type a city manually. Write the feature you want before deciding whether to approve the request.
The goal is to make a deliberate choice, not to deny every request. Some features need access to work. If you cannot connect the requested access to an intended feature, pause and read the app’s explanation or help page.
Use a four-column record
Create a note with these columns: permission, feature, scope, decision. For a map, an example might be “location; show my position; while using; allow.” For an optional profile photo, it might be “camera; take photo; only when needed; decide later.” These are illustrations, not recommendations for every device or app.
Android’s settings allow reviewing permissions per app and, on supported versions, by permission type. Available choices vary with the operating system and the permission. Consult the linked Android instructions for your device rather than relying on a screenshot from another phone.
Check what happens after a refusal
Try the ordinary feature with optional access declined. Can you still browse, type an address or choose a file yourself? Record the missing function precisely. “Cannot attach a new photo” is more useful than “the app does not work.” This helps distinguish a real dependency from an unnecessary convenience.
For a work-managed phone, check your organisation’s requirements before changing controls. Do not use permission experiments to bypass device policies. For health or financial apps, avoid putting sensitive records into a trial solely to test an interface.
Repeat the check when your use changes
Permissions can outlive the reason you granted them. When you stop using voice messages, location-based suggestions or contact discovery, review whether that access still serves your needs. Also review apps you no longer use.
