The trade-off is ecosystem lock-in: books arrive in Amazon's proprietary formats with DRM, so a library built here does not travel to other reading apps. Because Apple's App Store policies prohibit external purchase links, buying on iOS means leaving the app and going to a browser, which is a persistent friction for new readers.
